Haptic Feedback in Sports

Haptic Feedback in Sports

Haptic stimuli are a key modality when giving feedback during exercise as other senses are (over)loaded or should be attuned to environment for safety, for example when exercising outside. The feedback can for example raise awareness of movement, be part of a learning strategy, or focus on the social aspect of sports. There were a number of projects on haptics in sports with some students focusing on their own favorite sport. A number of questions is still open, such as:

  • Long term studies (learning, feedback fading strategies) building on an existing intervention for example for running, swimming or skating.
  • Body location of haptic feedback presentation and cognitive load.
  • Perception thresholds of haptic stimuli (electrotactile, vibration, pressure) during (intense) exercise.
  • Learning and feedback fading strategies.
  • Haptic feedback in teamsports.
  • A prototyping suit for haptic interaction design during exercise.
